iPhone 18 Pro Camera Upgrade Costs Apple 50% More, Analyst Says

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are set to incorporate a significantly more expensive camera component, with a new variable aperture lens costing the tech giant approximately 50% more per unit compared to the cameras in current models. This information comes from prominent supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been tracking Apple's product development. The variable aperture technology, a feature long rumored for iPhones, will allow the lens to physically adjust its opening size. This change will provide superior control over light exposure and offer greater flexibility in managing depth of field, a notable advancement from the fixed apertures used in iPhones since the 14 Pro series.

Kuo reported that the average selling price for this advanced component is roughly half again as much as the current seven-element plastic lens found in the iPhone 17 Pro's main camera. The increased cost is attributed to the sophisticated engineering required for a variable aperture system. This technological leap is expected to deliver tangible improvements in photographic capabilities for users of the new Pro models.

New Supplier and Future Innovations

In addition to the higher cost of the camera module, Sunny Optical has emerged as a new supplier for Apple's compact camera modules (CCMs). Initially, the company began by producing cameras for the recently released MacBook Neo. The demand for the MacBook Neo has reportedly surpassed Apple's expectations, with Kuo revising his 2026 forecast upwards from 5 million to 10 million units. This strong performance of the entry-level Mac is a positive indicator for Sunny Optical's role in Apple's supply chain.

Looking further ahead, Apple is also planning significant changes for its 2028 iPhone lineup. The ultra-wide camera module is anticipated to transition from its current flip-chip packaging to an improved Chip-on-Board (COB) design. Sunny Optical appears well-positioned to secure orders for this future component as well. A COB design could allow for thinner or smaller modules, freeing up internal space for other components, or it could enhance image quality within the same physical dimensions. These advancements highlight Apple's continuous effort to push the boundaries of mobile photography.

Beyond its work with Apple, Sunny Optical has also secured orders for components from OpenAI, including a smartphone and a separate mobile device. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are slated for a fall 2026 launch, expected to arrive alongside Apple's first-ever foldable iPhone. The introduction of variable aperture technology signifies a major step forward in the competitive smartphone camera market, potentially setting a new standard for image capture in mobile devices.
