Gmail Adds Conversational AI Search at Google IO 2026
Google announced new conversational AI features for Gmail at its IO 2026 developer conference. The "Gmail Live" feature allows users to ask natural language questions to find information within their inboxes.

Google is further integrating artificial intelligence into its popular email service, unveiling conversational AI capabilities for Gmail at the Google IO 2026 developer conference on Tuesday. The new feature, dubbed "Gmail Live," enables users to query their inbox using natural language questions rather than relying solely on keyword searches. This advancement aims to help users quickly retrieve specific information, such as flight details, appointment times, or event particulars, that might otherwise be buried deep within their email history.
Previously, locating such information required users to type in precise search terms, which could be cumbersome and often yielded imprecise results, especially when keywords appeared across multiple messages. "Gmail Live can answer naturally phrased questions, respond to follow-up questions, and pivot if you need to interrupt it," explained Devanshi Bhandari, product lead for Gmail, during a briefing preceding the conference. The technology is powered by Google's Gemini AI models.
Google's push to showcase practical AI applications is particularly noteworthy at a time when the broader societal impact and cost of AI are under scrutiny. By making a common pain point – finding lost information in an inbox – more manageable, Google hopes to demonstrate tangible benefits of AI for everyday users. Bhandari demonstrated Gmail Live by asking it about a child's school event and trip details, as well as travel information for an upcoming trip to Detroit. The tool could also extract granular data like a hotel room number and infer user intent even when individuals were not explicitly named.
Expanding AI's Reach Beyond the Inbox
The conversational interface functions similarly to standalone AI chatbots, allowing users to ask questions aloud and receive spoken or displayed responses. During the demonstration, Gmail Live showcased its ability to understand nuanced queries, differentiating between general "trip" and specific "field trip" references, and seamlessly shifting between topics. This enhanced understanding and flexibility represent a significant step beyond traditional search functions.
This voice-activated capability is also extending to Google Keep, Google's to-do list application, the company announced. It is important to note that Gmail Live is intended as an alternative search method, not a replacement for the existing Gmail search functionality. This approach may stem from lessons learned after Google Photos' AI-powered search implementation earlier this year, which faced user backlash before being made optional. Google appears to be prioritizing user choice in its AI integrations.
Beyond Gmail Live, the company also announced other Gmail enhancements at Google IO 2026, including pre-written draft options, immediate file access, and improved task management within the to-do list features. The broader "AI Inbox" experience, which provides an overview of important items and tasks, will also be accessible to Google AI Pro and Plus subscribers, in addition to the existing AI Ultra tier. However, the voice-powered Gmail Live feature will be rolled out later this summer, initially exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
