iPhone Loyalty Hits 87% as Android Switchers Decline
New research indicates a significant increase in iPhone loyalty, with 87% of new buyers sticking with Apple's platform. This marks a rise from previous years as fewer users switch from Android devices.

Apple's iPhone is demonstrating robust customer retention, with a new report by market research firm CIRP indicating that 87% of iPhone buyers in the first quarter of 2026 remained loyal to the platform. This figure represents a three-percentage-point increase from the same period in the previous year, when the iPhone loyalty rate stood at 84%.
CIRP's quarterly survey, which analyzes consumer behavior among smartphone users, found that only 12% of new iPhone purchasers in the March quarter had previously owned an Android device. An additional 1% transitioned from feature phones, other smartphone operating systems, or were first-time smartphone buyers. This sustained high loyalty rate suggests a maturing smartphone market where users largely settle on a preferred platform early in their device ownership journey.
The research firm has been tracking these user migration patterns for several years by surveying iPhone buyers about their previous devices and purchasing habits. Historically, the percentage of buyers switching from Android to iPhone has remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 11% and 15% in recent periods. This range is considerably smaller than in the earlier years of the iPhone, when Apple was actively expanding its carrier partnerships in the U.S. and rapidly acquiring new customers.
Shifting Market Dynamics
The trend of strong platform adherence was also evident in early 2024, a period that saw 13% of iPhone buyers migrating from Android, resulting in an 85% loyalty rate. CIRP's data points to a widespread phenomenon where the majority of smartphone owners have established their platform preference long ago, with only a small fraction opting to switch each year. This observation aligns with findings from various other recent studies, despite differing methodologies and specific data points.
Industry analysts suggest that Apple's continued focus on user experience, ecosystem integration, and anticipated software advancements, such as the planned overhaul of Siri with enhanced AI capabilities in iOS 17 later this year, will be crucial for maintaining existing customer satisfaction. The introduction of new hardware, like Apple's projected foldable iPhone, could also serve as a draw for users currently invested in the Android foldable market, offering a new form factor that might entice a segment of users to consider switching.
While attracting users from rival platforms remains a persistent challenge, the current high rate of iPhone loyalty underscores the effectiveness of Apple's strategy in cultivating a dedicated user base. The company's ongoing efforts to enhance its product offerings and software services are likely to play a pivotal role in sustaining this trend in the coming years.
