iPhone 18 to Get 9GB RAM, But Still Misses Key iOS 27 Features
The upcoming iPhone 18 models will reportedly feature 9GB of RAM, an upgrade from the iPhone 17 series. However, two advanced Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27 will remain exclusive to higher-end devices with 12GB RAM.
Apple's next generation of smartphones, the iPhone 18 lineup, is set to receive a RAM upgrade to 9GB for its standard models, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This increase, from 8GB in the iPhone 17 series, is intended to ensure smoother operation of Apple Intelligence features. However, even with this boost, the base iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will not support two key functionalities of the forthcoming iOS 27: enhanced Siri voice customization and improved speech-to-text dictation accuracy. These advanced capabilities rely on an on-device AI model that requires a minimum of 12GB of RAM, a specification reserved for the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the anticipated foldable iPhone Ultra.
Kuo's analysis, shared via social media, outlines the expected RAM configurations. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the innovative iPhone Ultra will retain the 12GB of RAM found in their iPhone 17 Pro predecessors. The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are slated for an early 2027 release, around March, while the Pro models and the Ultra are anticipated to launch in September 2026. The second-generation iPhone Air is also expected to feature 12GB of RAM.
AI Demands Drive Hardware Differentiation
