Solar Eclipse Dazzles Europe, Partial Views For U.S. Skies Next Week
A solar eclipse will grace European skies next week, with total visibility for some and partial views for parts of the U.S. Experts urge extreme caution for safe viewing.

Skywatchers across Europe and portions of the United States will have the chance to witness a striking solar eclipse next Wednesday. The celestial event will offer a total solar eclipse for observers in Iceland, Greenland, northern Russia, Spain, and parts of Portugal, according to astronomers. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely obscuring the Sun's disk.
For those in the northern United States, including regions from Alaska down to North Carolina, a partial solar eclipse will be visible. This phenomenon happens when the Moon passes between the sun and Earth but without a perfect alignment, resulting in only a portion of the Sun being covered. Viewers will see the Sun appear in a crescent shape. NASA reports that the partial eclipse is expected to begin around 1:17 p.m. ET in Washington, D.C., with approximately 4% coverage.
In Reykjavík, Iceland, the total eclipse is set to commence at 5:48 p.m. local time. Meanwhile, in León, Spain, the spectacle of totality will begin at 8:28 p.m. and is predicted to last for two minutes. This upcoming event marks a significant moment for Spain, as it will be the first solar eclipse visible from the country's mainland since 1905, according to data from the European Space Agency.
Safety Precautions for Viewing
To safely experience either the total or partial solar eclipse, specialized protective equipment is essential. This includes certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers equipped with special filters. NASA and the American Academy of Ophthalmology strongly advise against using regular sunglasses, as they offer insufficient protection and can lead to severe eye damage, including permanent vision loss, even with brief exposure.
Beyond the visual spectacle, the eclipse presents a valuable scientific opportunity. Researchers plan to deploy scientific balloons and a high-altitude jet to study the impact of the darkened sky on Earth's atmosphere. "From our unique perspective on Earth during a total solar eclipse, scientists can study the Sun's corona in a way we can't from anywhere else in the solar system," stated Kelly Korreck, eclipse program manager for NASA. Understanding the Sun's corona, its outermost atmosphere, is crucial for comprehending space weather phenomena that can affect our planet.
This event is a precursor to future celestial displays. The next partial solar eclipse visible across parts of the U.S. is scheduled for August 2, 2027. A more significant event, a total solar eclipse, will traverse parts of the contiguous U.S. on August 23, 2044, offering a rare chance for nationwide viewing.
