September 2026 promises a celestial spectacle for skygazers, with events ranging from a neighboring galaxy to planetary close encounters. Notably, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) offers a prime viewing opportunity early in the month, alongside a close pairing of Venus and Spica shortly after sunset.

On Tuesday, September 1, observers can direct their gaze northeast to find the Andromeda Galaxy. Binoculars will reveal M31 as a fuzzy, elongated smudge of light, our closest galactic neighbor. Under darker skies with a medium-aperture telescope, astronomers can discern the galaxy's dark dust lanes and its satellite galaxies, M32 and M110. Astrophotographers can capture M31 using a DSLR with a 50-200mm lens and stacking exposures, while smart telescopes can easily resolve finer details.

The following evening, Wednesday, September 2, presents a more intimate planetary display. Bright Venus will appear just south of the blue-white star Spica, less than two degrees apart, low on the southwestern horizon shortly after sunset. A telescope will allow viewers to observe Venus's phases, akin to the moon's, providing a visual cue to its orbital position. Smartphone cameras with a "Night Mode" can also capture this event, though adjusting exposure is key to avoid washing out Spica.

Celestial Wonders Beyond the Horizon

The long shadows cast by mountains and crater walls, such as those of the Lunar Apennines and the crater Tycho, are dramatically emphasized. This offers an excellent opportunity for lunar photography with a smartphone attached to a telescope.

Saturday, September 5, features the Double Cluster in Perseus (NGC 869 & NGC 884). Visible as a striking patch to the naked eye, binoculars reveal it as twin diamond bursts. Telescopic views allow for the identification of red supergiant stars interspersed with younger, blue-white stars. This celestial pair is also a good target for beginner tracking mounts and can be framed with the Milky Way using a modest telephoto lens.

In the predawn sky on Sunday, September 6, Mars will appear about 3 degrees south of the waning crescent moon. While the closest approach occurs during daylight, the pre-dawn viewing provides a chance to see both objects together. Steady atmospheric conditions might allow resolution of Martian surface features or its polar ice cap with a telescope. This event is also ideal for landscape astrophotography, capturing the moon and Mars rising above terrestrial elements, highlighting the color contrast between the pale moon and rusty Mars.

The proximity of the moon to Earth continues into Monday, September 7, making the waning crescent appear slightly larger.
