MTG-I2 Weather Satellite Set for Ariane 6 Launch
The MTG-I2 weather satellite is encapsulated and ready for its launch aboard Europe's Ariane 6 rocket from French Guiana. The mission aims to provide high-resolution atmospheric data every 2.5 minutes.

The Meteosat Third Generation Imager2 satellite (MTG-I2) is now encapsulated within the fairing of the Ariane 6 rocket and positioned on its launch pad. The launch is scheduled for Thursday evening, August 27, 2026, from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. This crucial step follows the encapsulation process, where the two halves of the rocket's fairing were sealed around the MTG-I2 satellite. The entire upper segment, housing the satellite, was then carefully hoisted atop the vertical launcher inside the Mobile Gantry. Preparations are complete for liftoff, with the Mobile Gantry set to roll away, leaving the Ariane 6 launcher and its payload ready for the final countdown. This mission marks a significant advancement in Earth observation capabilities.
The MTG-I2 satellite is designed to complete the first family of MTG satellites, delivering weather forecasting data for Europe and northern Africa with unprecedented quality, quantity, and frequency. It will capture high-resolution images of the atmosphere every 2.5 minutes, enabling earlier warnings for severe weather events like thunderstorms and heavy rain. This enhanced predictive capacity will allow emergency services, authorities, and citizens to better prepare for extreme weather. Such accuracy and timeliness in forecasting are vital for protecting weather-dependent European economies, including agriculture, transport, insurance, and tourism, as well as critical infrastructure and energy networks.
Advanced Earth Observation Capabilities
This launch will be the ninth mission for Europe’s heavy-lift Ariane 6 rocket. For the VA270 flight carrying MTG-I2, the Ariane 6 will be configured with two P120C solid-propellant rocket motors. The mission's destination is a geostationary transfer orbit, representing the first time Ariane 6 will travel this far, marking its farthest flight to date. The European Space Agency (ESA) oversees the Ariane 6 development program, which is crucial for ensuring Europe's autonomous access to space. Arianespace served as the launch service provider for this mission.
The development of the MTG satellites involved a collaborative effort by ESA and a large consortium of European industries. Thales Alenia Space led the manufacturing, with key contributions from OHB System in Germany and Leonardo in Italy. Once the satellites are commissioned, Eumetsat will operate them, disseminating the valuable scientific data gathered to meteorological agencies and researchers worldwide. The successful deployment of MTG-I2 signifies a leap forward in our ability to monitor and predict Earth's weather systems.
