Two sound designers, Joel Corelitz and Colin Coogan of the startup Starling, have developed a software solution to eliminate the universally disliked beeping sounds from microwave ovens. The pair, who have previously lent their expertise to major companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Ford, aim to transform the user experience by redesigning the appliance's auditory cues using only code, circumventing the need for expensive hardware modifications.

For decades, microwave ovens have employed a basic, low-cost passive piezoelectric buzzer to generate their alerts. This simple component, a vibrating membrane activated by an electrical charge, has remained a staple due to its minimal cost, often amounting to mere cents. While manufacturers can alter the frequency and duration of these beeps, the inherent sound quality is rudimentary. Starling's approach circumvents this limitation by reprogramming the existing microcontrollers within microwaves to produce a wider range of sounds.

Joel Corelitz explained the technical feasibility: "Any microcontroller that accepts C++ can take different programming and produce different sounds. There's already a microcontroller in there, and there's already a piezo buzzer." Using their custom-built software, dubbed Microwave Sound Bench, Corelitz has demonstrated the ability to generate sounds far removed from the typical shrill alert. These include short trills, frequency sweeps reminiscent of cartoon sound effects, and even sequences that evoke a video game aesthetic, all while utilizing the standard hardware found in most kitchens.

A Shift in Sonic Perception

The innovation from Starling addresses a long-standing annoyance for consumers. Richard Hughes, former principal UX designer at Whirlpool and now design lead for digital user experiences at Volvo in North America, noted that many appliance companies lack dedicated internal audio expertise. "They do on engineering for product noise, but very little sound design," Hughes stated. He confirmed that during his tenure at Whirlpool, similar experiments were conducted, leading to positive user reception for a softer, more pleasant sound on a premium toaster. This suggests a market demand for improved audio experiences in home appliances.

The challenge for Corelitz and Coogan lay in creating appealing sounds without any hardware upgrades, a task they found particularly enticing. "It can be more challenging to communicate a lot with a little, which made the challenge more enticing to them both," Coogan commented. Initial reactions to their sonic experiments on social media platform Instagram have been overwhelmingly positive, with many users expressing a willingness to pay a premium for a microwave with improved sound design. "One of the top things that people kept commenting over and over again was, ‘Oh my God, I would pay $50 more for a microwave that sounded better,’" Coogan revealed.

Hughes further elaborated on the industry's inertia: "A lot of these companies don't have internal audio expertise." He pointed out that while product aesthetics are often updated, the underlying technical specifications, including sound output, frequently carry over from older models, leading to the ubiquitous, unpleasant beeps. However, Hughes anticipates a shift. "It's trickling down," he said, suggesting that companies are beginning to recognize the value of such subtle improvements, or "delighters," in product design. These enhancements, he believes, play a crucial role in consumer purchasing decisions and can make appliances feel more "magical." Starling's work directly aligns with this philosophy, aiming to supply these very delighters to the market.

The team at Starling is optimistic about the potential adoption of their technology. While they would welcome partnerships with major manufacturers like Panasonic or Samsung, they are not discouraged if companies choose to implement similar ideas independently. The core principle remains: improving the daily user experience through thoughtful sound design, making everyday interactions with technology more pleasant and less grating. This software-based approach offers a cost-effective pathway for appliance manufacturers to introduce a desirable feature without significant engineering investment, potentially ushering in a new era of quieter, more harmonious kitchens.
