Google is set to significantly enhance its Gemini Agent, an experimental feature designed to handle multi-step tasks, transforming it into a proactive "24/7 digital partner." Recent reports and newly discovered code strings suggest a major upgrade that will empower the AI to take actions on behalf of users, moving beyond simple question-answering and content generation.

The enhanced agent, internally codenamed "Remy" by some Google employees, aims to serve as a personal assistant for work, school, and everyday life. Unlike current iterations that primarily provide information, this advanced version is described as capable of "elevating the Gemini app into a true assistant that can take actions on your behalf." It will be deeply integrated across Google's ecosystem, with the ability to monitor user-relevant information, handle complex tasks proactively, and learn individual preferences over time.

AI Agent Takes Action on Web and Apps

According to new strings found in the beta version of the Google app (version 17.20), this upgraded Gemini Agent will be able to "take actions for you on the web and with your Connected Apps and skills." This includes tasks such as communicating with others, sharing documents, and making purchases. To achieve this, the agent will leverage information from user chats, connected applications, personal context, and location data. This marks a significant leap towards a more integrated and autonomous AI assistant.

The functionality is still considered an "experimental feature," with Google issuing a clear disclaimer: "It can make mistakes and expose data unintentionally." Users are advised to be precise with their requests, exercise caution with sensitive tasks, and supervise the agent's actions via a dedicated dashboard. The system is not intended for tasks requiring professional expertise, such as legal, medical, or financial advice.

Personalization is a key aspect of the new Gemini Agent. It will learn from user interactions, tasks performed, personal context, and uploaded files. Users will have control over their data through the "Gemini Apps Activity" settings, where they can manage and delete their activity. Google emphasizes user control by stating, "Gemini saves your browser and cookie data, like your login credentials and browsing history. You can clear this data, turn off Personal Intelligence and Connected Apps, and manage your Personal context in Settings."

The interface for interacting with the agent will remain conversational. A dedicated section is expected within the Gemini navigation drawer to display completed, in-progress, or tasks requiring user input. This organized view will allow users to easily manage, pin, rename, or continue their tasks, ensuring a streamlined user experience. This development places Google at the forefront of AI assistants designed for deep integration and proactive task management.
