CD Projekt Red has officially revealed "Songs of the Past," a new expansion for its critically acclaimed role-playing game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The announcement, initially expected during a livestream on May 28th, was inadvertently leaked via the RED Launcher. The expansion is slated for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, continuing the saga of Geralt of Rivia more than a decade after the base game's initial launch.

Co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory, a studio comprised of industry veterans who previously worked on The Witcher 3, "Songs of the Past" promises a brand new adventure for the legendary monster slayer. While details remain scarce, promotional material suggests a sword will play a central role in the upcoming narrative. Further information is expected to be shared by CD Projekt Red later this summer.

Technical Updates Accompany New Content

Alongside the announcement of the expansion, CD Projekt Red is also implementing updated minimum system requirements for The Witcher 3. Players will now need at least an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5 8400 processor, a NVIDIA GTX 1660 or AMD RX 5500 XT 8GB graphics card with at least 6GB of VRAM, 12GB of system RAM, and 70GB of SSD storage. The game will also exclusively run on 64-bit Windows 11 moving forward, adopting DirectX 12. These adjustments aim to ensure optimal performance for the new content, although players on older hardware or Windows 10 may need to revert to an earlier version of the game to maintain compatibility.

The decision to update system requirements and move to DX12 exclusively reflects the ongoing commitment to refining the player experience for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The original game, released in 2015, has received numerous updates and ports over the years, cementing its status as one of the most beloved RPGs. The upcoming expansion, "Songs of the Past," represents a significant new chapter, offering veteran players a chance to return to the Continent and experience Geralt's adventures once more.

Fool's Theory, the co-developer, is a studio founded by former CD Projekt Red employees, known for their work on the 2024 title *The Thaumaturge*. Their involvement signals a strong connection to the established lore and gameplay mechanics that fans have come to expect from the Witcher series. The collaboration aims to deliver an expansion that is both faithful to the original game's spirit and pushes narrative and technical boundaries.

The release of "Songs of the Past" in 2027 will mark a substantial gap between the original game and its new content, highlighting CD Projekt Red's long-term vision for its flagship titles. This extended development cycle allows for meticulous crafting of the story, environments, and gameplay elements, ensuring a high-quality experience for players eager to delve back into the world of The Witcher.
