Tesla 2026 Summer Update: Grok Calls, Caraoke Scores, Auto-Nav

Tesla has begun deploying its highly anticipated 2026 Summer Update, introducing a suite of new features and enhancements to its electric vehicle lineup. The automaker officially published the comprehensive release notes on X, detailing advancements in artificial intelligence integration, entertainment, and navigation. Key additions include expanded voice command functionality for its Grok AI, a scoring system for the popular Caraoke feature, and more intuitive automatic navigation that learns user routines.

The Grok AI assistant has seen significant upgrades, now capable of initiating phone calls, searching and playing music, adjusting the vehicle's climate control, and even opening the glovebox. This marks a substantial step forward from its initial July 2025 rollout, where Grok functioned primarily as a standalone chatbot with limited car control. Following the introduction of the "Hey Grok" wake word in the Spring Update 2026, this latest iteration further integrates the AI into vehicle operations. These new capabilities allow drivers to manage calls, media playback, climate settings, and the glovebox purely through voice commands, building upon the existing navigation features.

This evolution places Tesla's in-car AI more in line with premium automotive offerings, particularly those emerging from China, where advanced AI assistants are becoming standard even in more affordable models. The ability for an AI to seamlessly control vehicle functions via voice is rapidly becoming a benchmark for modern automotive interfaces.

Expanding Entertainment and Personalization

Caraoke, a feature first introduced in Tesla's V10 update back in 2019 and always restricted to Park for safety, now includes a scoring system. Drivers can test their vocal talents and see their performance rated, with high scores being saved to their individual Tesla profile. This transforms the feature into a more engaging and gamified experience for occupants.

In navigation, the update introduces "Automatic Navigation" that adapts to daily routines. Beyond the established destinations like Home, Work, and calendar events, the vehicle can now suggest and route to frequently visited locations. This could include a stop at the gym on the way home or a school drop-off point. Previously, Tesla's navigation could predict destinations based on calendar entries, but this new system learns recurring patterns from driving habits, proactively offering routes before the driver even inputs a destination.

Further enhancing the driving experience, navigation now prioritizes routes that users have previously taken. When multiple paths lead to the same destination, the system will favor roads the driver has used, offering a more personalized journey over the default fastest route. This feature is directly linked to the routine-learning capabilities, aiming to provide a more comfortable and familiar driving experience.

Convenience features accessible from the mobile app have also been expanded. Users can now set their desired Arrival Energy target from their phone, allowing them to pre-configure the battery level they wish to have upon reaching their destination. This is particularly useful for planning longer trips and ensuring sufficient charge. Additionally, uploading custom car wraps for the 3D model on the vehicle's display is now possible directly through the mobile app, eliminating the need for a USB drive. Tesla maintains a public GitHub repository for templates and instructions related to custom wraps.

For vehicles equipped with a rear display, the update includes new parental controls. While children in the back seat can watch content, only front-row occupants can control playback through the rear screen application, offering a new layer of management for families. This feature is available on the latest premium Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck models.

Other notable improvements listed in the release notes include the ability to find Superchargers by name when searching for a destination, adding Apple Music songs to the queue directly from search results or artist pages, setting preferred zoom levels for the Self-Driving visualization, and browser support for camera and microphone input. New intro animations for the Model 3 and Y have also been added.

The 2026 Summer Update is being rolled out incrementally, with the full deployment expected to take several weeks. Tesla vehicles typically receive software updates in waves, ensuring a stable transition for all users.
