Snapchat's Now Playing Feature Connects Friends Through Shared Music
Snapchat's new "Now Playing" feature on Snap Map allows users to share their real-time listening activity with friends, integrating directly with Spotify for seamless music discovery.

Snapchat has introduced a novel feature called "Now Playing" that allows users to broadcast the music they are currently listening to directly on Snap Map. This new functionality, revealed exclusively to TechCrunch, enables users to link their streaming service accounts, beginning with Spotify, to share their real-time listening habits with friends. The feature also provides a way for users to discover new music by seeing what their friends are enjoying.
Beyond Snap Map, "Now Playing" is integrated into Snapchat's Spotlight videos, the platform's short-form video content. If a user encounters a song they like in a Spotlight video, they can save it directly to their Spotify account or navigate to the track's page on the streaming platform. Snapchat users have granular control over their privacy, able to select precisely who can view their listening activity. The feature is designed to prevent the display of a user's last played song or overall listening history. Sharing remains active as long as the Snapchat app has been opened within the preceding 24 hours. If a user becomes inactive for more than 24 hours, the sharing of their music status will pause automatically, resuming only when the app is reopened. Users also have the option to pause sharing for specific durations: three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.
Music Discovery Becomes a Core Social Element
The introduction of "Now Playing" underscores a broader trend across social media platforms, which are increasingly embracing music discovery and sharing as key engagement drivers. Competitors are actively integrating similar functionalities. TikTok, a platform where viral music trends frequently influence global charts, allows users to share songs from streaming services and also save tracks they discover. Instagram, meanwhile, offers users the ability to share their current listening through "Notes," short status updates visible at the top of direct message inboxes. Even Spotify, the music streaming giant itself, has expanded its social features, enabling users to share their listening activity with friends in real time.
"Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer," stated Manny Adler, Snapchat's head of music, in a statement to TechCrunch. "Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know."
This integration enhances Snap Map, a feature that boasts over 450 million monthly active users. Initially launched in 2017, Snap Map was designed primarily as a tool for users to view their friends' locations and explore public Snaps shared from across the globe. Over the years, its capabilities have expanded significantly, now including features for discovering local businesses, events, and, with the addition of "Now Playing," music exploration. Snapchat confirmed that the new feature is progressively rolling out to users in regions where both Spotify and Snapchat are readily available, with Canada expected to receive the update soon.
