Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac users are facing a significant restriction: starting July 13, 2026, they will no longer be able to edit their documents on the aging productivity suite. This change stems from the expiration of a digital certificate used to validate the software's license. The affected applications include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

Once the digital certificate expires, these Office 2019 applications will enter what Microsoft terms "reduced functionality mode." This means users will still be able to open, view, and print existing files. However, the creation, editing, and saving of new or existing documents will be disabled. Microsoft has indicated that similar restrictions may affect older, un-updatable iPhone and iPad versions of Office.

Certificate Renewal and Update Limitations

While Microsoft has reportedly renewed the necessary digital certificate, the fix is contingent on a software update. Users of the current Microsoft 365 subscription service and the perpetual license Office 2021 are unaffected as they are slated to receive the update to version 16.83, which incorporates the renewed certificate. In contrast, Microsoft officially ended support for Office 2019 on October 10, 2023, and has not issued any updates since. Consequently, Office 2019 will not receive the crucial 16.83 update, leaving its users vulnerable to this editing lockout. Microsoft has clarified that reinstalling Office 2019 will not resolve the issue.

Microsoft is guiding affected users toward several alternatives. These include utilizing the company's free Microsoft 365 web apps, subscribing to a paid Microsoft 365 plan, or purchasing a one-time license for Office 2024. For those running supported versions of Office on macOS 12 Monterey or later, updating to build 16.83 is the recommended solution. Similarly, iOS users on iOS 17 or later should update to build 2.93 for their Office applications.

The situation highlights a broader trend of software vendors phasing out support for older perpetual license software in favor of subscription models. Critics argue that Microsoft's approach is a self-imposed deadline, citing the company's ability to renew the certificate but its decision not to distribute the update to Office 2019 users. JimmyTech, an IT consultancy that first identified the certificate issue, suggested that using the expiry as a catalyst to retire older software, rather than a quiet renewal, represents a strategic choice by the company.

Microsoft's communication regarding the end-of-support for Office 2019 for Mac has also drawn criticism. An earlier version of its end-of-support page for Office 2019, posted in October 2023, assured users that their apps would "continue to function." However, a revised version dated May 15, 2026, removes this assurance, stating instead that data "can be accessed in a supported Microsoft 365 or Office product." While Microsoft began notifying affected customers in May 2026, some Office 2019 owners may still be unaware of the impending restriction.

For users seeking alternatives to Microsoft's aging Office suite, Apple's iWork suite offers a viable option. Additionally, the free and open-source LibreOffice, developed by The Document Foundation, provides a robust and feature-rich alternative for document creation and editing.

It is also worth noting that Office 2021 will reach its own end of support on October 13, 2026. While the applications will continue to operate after this date, they will cease to receive critical security and feature updates.
