iOS 27: Apple Messages Gets New AI, Drawing Tool
Apple's upcoming iOS 27 update introduces significant enhancements to the Messages app, including AI-powered writing assistance, a new drawing feature, and improved notification management.
Apple is set to release a slate of new features for its Messages application with the upcoming iOS 27 operating system update, slated for a fall release. The enhancements include the integration of artificial intelligence for message composition, a novel drawing tool, and several quality-of-life improvements aimed at streamlining communication and reducing notification overload.
Among the most notable additions is the ability to use Siri AI to draft or revise messages. Users will find a "Write with Siri" option above the keyboard in the chat interface. This feature, exclusive to devices supporting Apple Intelligence, allows users to dictate their message, ask Siri to compose it, or even request revisions to alter the tone or add details. Siri AI can also be employed to locate specific messages, images, or links within the app.
The Messages app is also gaining a new functionality called "Drawing," which enables users to quickly sketch an image and send it to contacts. This feature will be accessible through the '+' button in the chat interface, and recipients will be able to view the drawings regardless of their iOS version.
Notifications and Reliability Updates
iOS 27 addresses the common issue of notification fatigue by consolidating multiple reactions to a single message into one alert. Previously, a flurry of reactions could inundate users with individual notifications. This update also brings performance improvements, ensuring faster loading and syncing of messages across devices. Furthermore, the system will now automatically attempt to resend failed messages, a process previously requiring manual intervention.
Another user-requested customization is the ability to remove or change the voice message button located in the text field. Users can opt to remove it entirely, switch it to dictation, or keep it as is, accessible via Settings > Apps > Messages. For those who use voice notes, iOS 27 introduces playback speed controls, allowing users to listen at 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x speed. This feature is designed to save time when dealing with longer audio messages.
The update also introduces one-tap suggestions powered by Siri AI for iPhones compatible with Apple Intelligence. Examples include AI suggesting relevant photos when asked, or providing quick actions like adding a message to Notes or Reminders. To improve clarity in busy conversations, each message will now feature its own send indicator, distinguishing between sent text and media uploads. The search functionality is also being enhanced, allowing users to find conversations by phone number or nickname, provided the nickname is saved in their contacts.
The integration of AI and enhanced usability features in the Messages app signals Apple's continued focus on refining its core communication tools. These updates aim to make messaging more efficient, personalized, and less intrusive for iPhone users.
