A new initiative by Necrosoft Games and the United Videogame Workers-CWA (UVW-CWA) union offers gamers a way to directly support developers facing job insecurity in the current video game industry climate. The "Game Industry Hardship Bundle," launched on July 30, 2026, features more than 100 games, with all proceeds, minus platform processing fees, directed to the UVW-CWA's worker hardship fund. This fund provides financial assistance to developers who have been recently laid off in the U.S. and Canada.

As of its launch, the bundle had already garnered over $20,000. It operates on a pay-what-you-want model, with a minimum contribution of $10. The collection includes DRM-free PC versions of titles such as "A Short Hike," "SkateBIRD," and "Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure." Developers who lost their jobs after January 2024 are eligible to apply for aid through a designated application process. While the fund is currently limited to laid-off developers, contractors, or freelancers in the U.S. or Canada due to the UVW-CWA's jurisdictional boundaries, recipients do not need to be union members.

Industry Challenges Spur Community Support

The reality of frequent layoffs has become a stark fixture in the video game industry, affecting studios of all sizes, regardless of their recent successes. A 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry report indicates that more than a quarter of all developers have experienced layoffs within the past two years. In the United States alone, this figure rises to approximately one-third. These figures represent not just statistics but individual lives impacted by economic shifts and industry consolidation.

The hardship fund and the accompanying game bundle are direct responses to these widespread job losses. They aim to provide a crucial safety net for individuals whose livelihoods are often disrupted despite delivering high-quality, commercially successful work. The organizers emphasize that community support, exemplified by initiatives like this bundle, is a vital tool for navigating these turbulent times. This effort highlights the growing recognition of collective action and unionization as essential elements for long-term stability and worker protection within the game devs community.

The bundle is scheduled to remain available for purchase until August 13, 2026, providing a limited-time opportunity for players to contribute to this cause while acquiring a diverse collection of independent games. The initiative underscores a broader movement within the industry towards mutual aid and solidarity among its workforce.
