Audacity 4: Major Overhaul for Free Audio Editor Marks 26-Year Milestone

Audacity, the globally recognized free and open-source audio editing software, has officially launched its most significant update in its 26-year history, version 4. The new release by Muse Group aims to modernize the user experience while retaining the core functionality that has made it a favorite among creators for over two decades.

The update introduces a refreshed user interface, now opening on a dedicated home screen, offering a more contemporary feel. While users who prefer the classic aesthetic can revert, the changes are designed to enhance usability and streamline workflows. Muse Group stated that "nearly every aspect" of the audio editing process has been improved to offer greater flexibility for complex projects. Key enhancements include the ability for audio clips to overlap on the timeline, grouping of clips, and new trimming and stretching handles. Crucially, audio editing is now non-destructive, meaning that trimming clips no longer permanently removes underlying audio data.

Streamlined Editing and New Functionality

Audacity 4 also welcomes a new Split tool for precise slicing of audio clips and an improved Envelope tool for managing audio levels. Each track now features an individual level meter, which can also serve as an input monitor during recording. The main playback meter offers a new vertical orientation option. A significant new feature is the introduction of "Workspaces," allowing users to save and switch between different interface configurations tailored to specific tasks or personal workflows. This customization aims to make the already popular audio editor even more adaptable to individual user needs.
