Amazon is making it simpler for viewers to buy items they see while watching Prime Video content. The e-commerce giant revealed a suite of new features on Thursday designed to connect customers with products featured in thousands of Prime Video titles. These updates build upon the existing X-Ray feature, which already provides real-time information on actors, characters, and music. The company is also introducing a "Shop the Scene" capability, leveraging Amazon's visual search technology, alongside other enhancements.

Last year, Amazon launched "Shop the Show," a companion shopping experience accessible via the Amazon mobile app. This feature allowed users to type "shop the show" into the Amazon Search app to discover products linked to movies, shows, or live sports events, bypassing the need to interrupt viewing or display on-screen prompts. However, this function was relatively obscure. The latest updates aim to make product recommendations more visible and readily available, a move that places Amazon alongside other platforms seeking to monetize viewership through integrated shopping suggestions.

Integrating Commerce into Content

The trend of blending e-commerce with streaming content is gaining momentum across the digital landscape. YouTube offers creators a merchandise shelf and shoppable connected TV ads. Peacock introduced its "Must ShopTV" feature in 2023, enabling viewers to purchase items seen within its programming. Roku devices also facilitate shopping directly through their remote controls, and Disney has explored shoppable TV initiatives, including advertisements on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN.

To access the new shopping features within Amazon's X-Ray, users can press the up button on their Fire TV remote. A new "Shop" tab will then appear, displaying products relevant to the content being watched. For seamless purchasing, users can open the Amazon Shopping app, which will recognize the program and direct them to a synchronized feed of related products. This second-screen experience has been streamlined: instead of a specific search query, opening the Amazon Shopping app during a movie or show now automatically leads to that title's dedicated storefront. From there, tapping an image can activate Amazon's visual search technology, Amazon Lens, to identify items inspired by character outfits, home decor, and other visual elements within the scene.

While "Shop the Scene" may not always provide exact matches – characters sometimes wear high-end or custom-made costumes not available through Amazon or its sellers – it serves as an effective starting point for users seeking similar styles or items. This visual search innovation is currently available on iOS and Android devices in the U.S. and supports over 600 titles, expanding Amazon's strategy to capture impulse purchases driven by viewer engagement. The integration seeks to capitalize on the emotional connection viewers form with content, translating passive viewing into active commerce. This strategic pivot reflects a broader industry push towards diversified revenue streams in the increasingly competitive streaming market.
