Microsoft has confirmed substantial price increases for its Xbox consoles in the European Union and the United Kingdom, following earlier adjustments in the US market. The latest price hikes, effective now, will see certain models become significantly more expensive, with increases reaching up to €200 in the EU and £170 in the UK.

The 1TB Xbox Series X, previously retailing for £499.99 or €599.99, will now cost £669.99 or €799.99, marking an increase of over 30 percent. The more affordable 512GB Xbox Series S is also set for a notable price jump, rising from £299.99 / €349.99 to £429.99 / €499.99, a surge of more than 43 percent. These adjustments place the consoles at new price points not seen since their initial launches.

This marks the third wave of price adjustments for Xbox consoles since May 2025. The current top-tier model, the 2TB Xbox Series X, now carries a price tag substantially higher than its original $499.99 launch price in 2020. The ongoing global demand for storage components, exacerbated by the needs of the artificial intelligence industry, has led to a worldwide shortage and increased costs for RAM and SSDs. While other hardware manufacturers have also passed on some of these increased component costs, Microsoft's latest changes for the EU and UK markets represent one of the most dramatic shifts.

Market Impact and Component Costs

The escalating costs of essential components like RAM and storage are creating a challenging environment for consumer electronics manufacturers. The surge in demand, particularly from the burgeoning AI industry, has put a strain on supply chains. This has forced companies to re-evaluate their pricing strategies to maintain profitability.

Microsoft's decision to implement these significant price increases reflects the broader economic pressures impacting the gaming industry. For consumers in the affected regions, this means the barrier to entry for current-generation Xbox consoles has been raised considerably. The company has also confirmed the discontinuation of the 2TB model of the Xbox Series X, a move that may be linked to the ongoing supply chain challenges and the need to streamline production in favor of more standard configurations.

Industry analysts suggest that while price increases are sometimes necessary, the magnitude of these particular hikes could influence consumer purchasing decisions, especially with the availability of other entertainment options. The exact long-term impact on Xbox sales in these crucial markets remains to be seen, but the immediate effect is a notable increase in the cost of acquiring Microsoft's latest gaming hardware.
