Valve Warns Memory Shortage Worsens, Cites Capacity Limits
Valve engineers report that the global memory and storage shortage is intensifying, impacting hardware availability and production capacity.

Gaming hardware manufacturer Valve has acknowledged that the ongoing global shortage of memory and storage components is "still getting worse," citing severe limitations on production capacity. Engineers working on the company's latest hardware projects, including the Steam Machine, revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that the situation has surpassed their initial expectations.
"We knew there was going to be an issue with sourcing" due to the immense demand from the artificial intelligence industry for data centers and advanced memory chips, explained Pierre-Loup Griffais, an engineer at Valve. "The extent was beyond anything we actually expected." He added, "We're basically building everything we can get our hands on. We're limited by memory capacity, for sure."
The sentiment was echoed by another engineer, Yazan Aldehayyat, who stated, "Honestly, it's still getting worse." He further elaborated on the visible lag in consumer availability, noting, "What people are seeing on retail shelves right now, from our observations, is lagging what we're seeing from a bulk supply by at least three to six months." This significant delay indicates a substantial bottleneck in the supply chain, affecting product launches and consumer access to new technology.
Supply Chain Strain and AI Demand
The current hardware crisis is largely attributed to a confluence of factors, with the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector playing a significant role. AI development requires vast amounts of high-speed memory and storage for training complex models and processing large datasets. This insatiable demand is competing directly with other hardware sectors, including consumer electronics and gaming devices.
Valve engineers admitted that while they had anticipated supply chain difficulties, the sheer scale of demand driven by AI advancements was unprecedented. "We're limited by memory capacity, for sure," Griffais reiterated, highlighting that available components are being prioritized for production. The company is reportedly securing all available hardware it can acquire to maintain its production schedules.
Despite the challenging supply landscape, Valve stated that the crisis is not expected to derail the roadmap for the Steam Machine. The company maintains that prices will eventually stabilize, either through a decrease in component costs or through market adjustments where current pricing becomes the norm. The Steam Machine, positioned as a desktop and living room sibling to the popular Steam Deck, was recently unveiled with limited availability. It is offered in 512GB and 2TB configurations, priced at $1,049 and $1,349 respectively. Prospective buyers were required to enter a lottery system, with many now joining a waiting list for the sought-after device.
The situation underscores the broader economic and technological pressures affecting the hardware industry in 2026. As demand for computing power escalates across various sectors, from gaming to advanced AI research, manufacturers face increasing difficulties in securing essential components like DRAM and NAND flash memory.
