Apple officially unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, in China on Wednesday, entering a market already saturated with comparable devices from domestic manufacturers. Despite a significant event, early consumer reactions on Chinese social media platforms suggest a lukewarm reception, with many users focusing on the device's premium price tag of 15,999 yuan ($2,230 USD) and comparing it unfavorably against more affordable options from rivals like Huawei and Xiaomi.

The iPhone Duo's pricing has become a central point of discussion among potential buyers. One user on WeChat noted the stark difference in purchasing power, stating, "We earn 3,000 to 4,000 yuan and spend 10,000 yuan on it," a sentiment that highlights the device's luxury positioning in the Chinese market. This comes as Apple's stock saw a modest increase of over 3% following the announcement, underscoring the company's efforts to capture a larger share in its third-largest market, Greater China, which accounts for approximately 17% of its total revenue.

Market Competition Heats Up

China's foldable phone sector is one of the most dynamic globally, with established players like Huawei, Xiaomi, Honor, Oppo, and Vivo already offering a diverse range of foldable designs, including book-style, flip, and even trifold models. Apple's entry into this arena means the iPhone Duo is entering a more mature ecosystem than it might in other regions. Just days before Apple's event, key competitors launched their latest foldable flagships: Xiaomi debuted its 18 Fold for 10,999 yuan, and Huawei introduced the trifold Mate XT2 priced at 19,999 yuan. A particularly pointed comment from a WeChat user asked, "Apple's Duo is cheaper than Huawei. Can you take it?"

Market share data from Counterpoint Research indicates that Huawei held the top position in China's smartphone market for both the first and second quarters of 2026, with Apple following in second place. This intense competition extends globally, where Samsung recently regained a narrow lead in overall smartphone shipments over Apple in the second quarter, with Xiaomi in third place. Research suggests Samsung also leads the foldable market with a 32% share, followed by Apple and Huawei at 25% and 24% respectively. The iPhone Duo is thus entering a fiercely contested space where brand loyalty and price-performance ratio are critical factors.

Beyond the cost, concerns have also been raised regarding the iPhone Duo's reliance on eSIM technology, lacking a physical SIM card slot. For mainland China users, activating an eSIM may necessitate a visit to a carrier store for identity verification, adding an extra step compared to the traditional SIM card experience. This detail could be another point of friction for consumers accustomed to more straightforward setup processes. While Xiaomi's 18 Fold is available starting Thursday and Huawei's Mate XT2 soon after, Apple's iPhone Duo is scheduled for pre-orders on October 16, with sales beginning October 23, setting a distinct timeline for its market debut against these immediate rivals.

The success of the iPhone Duo in China will be a significant indicator of Apple's ability to navigate the complex and price-sensitive dynamics of the global foldable smartphone market. With numerous alternatives already deeply entrenched, Apple faces a substantial challenge in convincing consumers that its premium offering justifies the considerable investment, especially when competing against highly capable and more affordable devices from its rivals.
