Apple Unveils New iOS 27 CarPlay Features for Enhanced In-Car Experience

Apple is set to significantly enhance the in-car digital experience with a range of new features arriving in the upcoming iOS 27 update for CarPlay. These updates, detailed by sources close to the company, promise a more interactive and intelligent system for drivers and passengers alike, covering everything from entertainment to navigation and voice assistance.

One of the most notable additions is the capability for CarPlay video apps to incorporate video browsing functions. While video playback will be restricted to when the vehicle is safely parked, users will be able to browse and watch content directly on their car's display. If a user is watching a video and shifts into drive, the playback will seamlessly transition to audio-only, ensuring driver safety remains paramount. Furthermore, iPhone apps that support AirPlay will also be able to stream content to the car's display, though automakers will need to enable this support on their vehicles. As of now, no car manufacturers have publicly announced plans to integrate this specific feature.

The integration of an advanced Siri AI is another key development. This more capable version of Siri will allow for more natural and hands-free conversations within the car. Similar to its functionality on other Apple devices, Siri AI for CarPlay can be instructed to perform tasks or retrieve information while driving. Importantly, conversations initiated in CarPlay will sync with the Siri app on the user's iPhone, allowing them to be continued or reviewed later.

Enhanced Media and Navigation Tools

Audio functionality is also getting an upgrade with the introduction of a persistent mini-player for the Now Playing CarPlay template. This player will prominently display album artwork and playback controls in the top right corner of audio and media applications. Users will also benefit from a progress bar within the Now Playing interface, enabling them to easily jump to specific sections within songs, podcasts, or audiobooks.

Navigation apps, including Apple Maps and Google Maps, will gain the ability to share route data directly with the vehicle. This integration is particularly beneficial for electric vehicle (EV) owners, as the car's system can cross-reference the route with the vehicle's current range and suggest optimal charging stops. This proactive approach aims to reduce range anxiety and streamline long-distance EV travel.

Apple has also focused on improving the reliability and location accuracy of wireless CarPlay in iOS 27. Enhancements to GPS accuracy and navigation heading detection are expected to provide a smoother and more dependable navigation experience. Additionally, all app categories within CarPlay will now offer a voice control option. Apple has developed a dedicated voice control template designed for seamless integration into apps, facilitating voice-driven interactions.

Natural language search capabilities are being extended to navigation within Apple Maps when used with CarPlay. Drivers can now ask Siri for directions that specifically avoid toll roads, highways, or other specified routes, offering greater personalization and control over their journeys. The new iOS 27 wallpapers, featuring wave-style designs in 14 color options, will also be formatted for the CarPlay interface. The system will support larger, more interactive content thumbnails and will incorporate updated Liquid Glass icons for core apps like Maps and Weather.

The upcoming software update also addresses compatibility by ensuring that all app categories within CarPlay can offer a voice control option. A standardized voice control template has been designed to be easily integrated into third-party applications, further expanding the utility of voice commands. While car manufacturers need to adopt these features, the groundwork laid by Apple in iOS 27 signals a significant step forward in making the car's digital interface more powerful, intuitive, and integrated with the user's digital life.
