The cost of high-performance graphics cards for PC gaming is on the rise, with reports indicating that both Nvidia and AMD may implement further price increases. This trend is largely attributed to escalating expenses for memory components, particularly GDDR7, which are crucial for the latest generation of GPUs.

Recent intelligence from Taiwan-based hardware tipster BenchLife suggests Nvidia is contemplating another round of price hikes for its graphics processing units (GPUs). These increases would affect both Nvidia's in-house "Founders Edition" cards and those produced by its Add-in Board (AIB) partners, who manufacture the majority of consumer graphics cards. Nvidia supplies GPUs and video random access memory (VRAM) as integrated units, compelling AIB manufacturers to absorb higher component costs, which are subsequently passed on to consumers.

The price pressure extends beyond the newest GDDR7 memory, reportedly impacting older GDDR6 modules as well. While Nvidia has reportedly ceased production of its older RTX 40-series GPUs, the elevated memory prices could still influence the cost of remaining inventory and newer models. AMD, which relies on GDDR6 memory for its Radeon RX 90-series GPUs, is also facing similar challenges. Initial rumors suggested AMD might increase prices this month, but reports now indicate August could see these price adjustments align with Nvidia's moves.

Memory Costs Driven by AI Demand

Further speculation from WeChat tipster Board Channels, shared via VideoCardz, indicates AMD may have postponed its price increases until Nvidia adjusts its AIB pricing structures. Gizmodo has reached out to AMD for official comment on the matter. Despite using older memory technology, AMD's Radeon cards like the RX 9060 XT, RX 9070, and RX 9070 XT have, until recently, maintained prices closer to their initial launch points compared to the Nvidia RTX 50-series. AMD has actively sought to compete with Nvidia on price, but the significant increases in memory costs have proven difficult to avoid. This has led to adaptations, such as the release of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE in the U.S. with 12GB of VRAM, a reduction from the 16GB found on comparable cards in its class.

Industry analysts point to the burgeoning demand for AI and high-performance computing as the primary driver behind these soaring memory prices. Large technology firms, referred to as AI hyperscalers, are consuming vast quantities of advanced memory chips for their data centers. Graphics card manufacturers, including AMD and Nvidia, are essentially supplying components for the same ecosystem that is driving up their own production costs. This creates a challenging environment where companies must navigate supply chain pressures while trying to maintain competitive pricing for their consumer products.

The strain on the GPU market is evident in the reduced visibility of mid-generation refreshes. Nvidia has remained silent on potential "Super" variants for its RTX 50-series, with some analysts predicting their arrival might be delayed until 2027. The RTX 50-series cards, particularly those equipped with 16GB of VRAM or more, were already significantly more expensive than their predecessors at launch. For instance, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, initially launched with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $750, is now frequently found for over $1,100, even during promotional periods. A comparable AMD Radeon RX 9070XT is priced just under $800, which is still above its original retail cost. The highest-end GPUs, such as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, are now commanding prices upwards of $4,300, making them prohibitive for most consumers.
