Google Pixel Phones May Soon Unlock Wear OS Watches Automatically

Google is apparently working on a new convenience feature that would allow users to automatically unlock their Pixel Watches by simply unlocking their paired Pixel phone. This new functionality, codenamed "Phone to Watch Unlock," would reverse the current "Watch Unlock" feature, which enables a Pixel Watch to unlock a Pixel phone.

The discovery was made by Android Authority through an analysis of code within Google's Connected Phone & Watch services app. This app is integral to other Pixel-exclusive features, including "Left Behind" notifications and the "Lock phone when left behind" function. The presence of strings like "Unlock your watch with this phone" and promotional messages such as "Unlocking your watch just got easier" strongly suggest that this feature will be exclusive to the Pixel ecosystem.

Streamlining Wearable Authentication

The proposed "Phone to Watch Unlock" aims to simplify the user experience by eliminating the need to repeatedly enter a PIN or pattern on the small screen of a smartwatch. Currently, if a Pixel Watch is removed from the wrist, even briefly, it requires authentication upon being worn again. This new feature would leverage the established security of an unlocked Pixel phone to automatically authenticate and unlock the connected watch.

While the exact rollout timeline remains unknown, the code suggests a setup process similar to the existing Watch Unlock. Users would likely need to enter their watch's current PIN or pattern once to establish the trusted connection between the phone and watch. Status messages found in the code, such as "Unlocking your watch" and "Watch unlocked," indicate the intended seamless operation. Google also appears to have considered the transition for users upgrading to new Pixel Watches, with code implying that this trusted relationship could be transferable.
