Apple is reportedly laying the groundwork to integrate advanced health and fitness tracking into its upcoming smart glasses, aiming to establish the wearable as a key companion for user well-being. While these functionalities are not expected to launch with the first generation model, the company envisions a future where its smart glasses play a pivotal role in monitoring and enhancing user health.

This strategic pivot towards health follows earlier aspirations with the Vision Pro headset. According to insights from Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, Apple had initially explored turning its spatial computer into a health platform. This included developing a version of the Apple Fitness+ app that would allow users to engage in workouts, monitor their movement, and achieve fitness goals directly within the headset. The plan also involved specialized body-tracking analysis to differentiate it from other devices like iPads or Apple TVs. However, these ambitions were reportedly shelved due to the Vision Pro's considerable weight and technological challenges, making it impractical for active use during exercise.

Evolving Health Vision for Smart Glasses

Despite the setbacks with the Vision Pro, Apple is revisiting a similar concept for its forthcoming smart glasses, adapting the approach to suit the device's form factor and limitations, particularly the absence of displays. The Vision Products Group, the team responsible for developing these glasses and future headsets, is actively seeking talent to "define the future of health, well-being and fitness experiences across vision products." The job description emphasizes translating "ambiguous opportunities at the intersection of spatial computing, wearables, consumer health and human behavior" into concrete product strategies.

Speculation suggests that Apple could combine features akin to the Workout Buddy feature introduced on the Apple Watch last year with integrated sensors, potentially including a heart-rate monitor similar to that seen in the latest AirPods Pro. Such a combination could transform the smart glasses into an invaluable tool for activities like running, enabling real-time feedback and performance analysis. The integrated cameras might also contribute significantly, allowing the system to understand user movements during workouts, identify areas for improvement, and provide corrective guidance. These advanced features, however, are anticipated to be rolled out in subsequent iterations rather than the initial launch, meaning consumers may need to wait a few years to experience Apple's full health-focused vision for its smart glasses.

The potential for smart glasses to serve as a health companion taps into a growing market trend. As wearable technology becomes more sophisticated, the integration of health monitoring into everyday eyewear presents a significant opportunity for companies like Apple. By leveraging its expertise in AI, sensor technology, and user experience design, Apple is poised to redefine personal health tracking, moving beyond dedicated fitness devices to a more seamlessly integrated approach. The success of this initiative will depend on overcoming technical hurdles and delivering a user experience that is both practical and compelling, making health and fitness monitoring an effortless part of a user's daily routine.
